Sector 17 Multilevel Parking Lot Under Vigilance Scanner

Following reports of the multilevel parking leaking during rains, the vigilance sleuths collected samples from the material used in the construction.

The 50-crore multilevel parking lot in Sector 17 has come under the scanner of the UT vigilance department. Following reports of the multilevel parking leaking during rains, the vigilance sleuths collected samples from the material used in the construction.

A complaint was submitted by a resident of Sector 48, following which the action was taken. Confirming the development, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) vigilance Sukhraj Katewa told the Chandigarh Newsline: “There were reports in the newspapers too about how the parking was leaking during rains. So we have taken the samples.”

After the company, earlier running the multilevel parking lot, left in August, three months after its inauguration last year, the civic body decided to run it with around 30 employees. However, people still preferred surface parking lots. At the multilevel parking, the fee is Rs 5 per vehicle. People complained they have to walk a distance and so did not prefer to park here. Now, the Arya Toll Infra Limited is managing the parking lot.

The BJP-led municipal corporation at that time had alleged that Congress during its tenure made faulty plans for the construction and they were still trying to run the multilevel parking lot. Traders in Sector 17 were asked to park their cars at the multilevel parking lot, but there were plaints that the roof leaked.

The corporation had even decided to shut down two Sector 17 parking lots – Empire Store and Sahib Singh but that was opposed by traders and the authorities were forced to re-open them, leading to a drastic fall in vehicles at the multi-level parking.

Built over a sprawling 4.78 acres at a cost of Rs 46.62 crore, the parking facility, having eight lifts, has two computerised ticket counters at entry and exit points and two ramps for the entry and exit of vehicles. The charge for four-wheelers is Rs 5 for the first four hours and Rs 5 for every additional hour.
