Chandigarh: Argument over swing installation at park, man stabbed several times

The police maintained that Dhillon is a sikh who used his small kirpan for committing the crime.

A man was stabbed multiple times in full public view following an argument over installation of swings adjoining to their houses at a public park in Sector 39 around 10.30am on Thursday. The injured, identified as Gurmeet Singh, was admitted to the Government Multi Speciality Hospital in Sector 16. Police arrested the accused, Inderjit Singh Dhillon, who also resides in the same locality.

The police said both the persons reside in the government quarters and their wives work with the Punjab government. The quarters are allotted to their wives. The police maintained that Dhillon is a sikh who used his small kirpan for committing the crime. The kirpan was seized. The incident took place when a team of municipal employees visited the public park for installing the swings.

Sources said Gurmeet, who is also the president of local residential body, advised the civic employees to install the swings in the left corner of the public park from where his house was very close. When the employees started the installation work, Dhillon arrived and insisted the employees to install the swings in the opposite corner.

Meanwhile, a verbal altercation broke out between both the persons and Dhillon pulled a sharp-edged weapon and attacked Gurmeet multiple time. The injured was rushed to the GMSH, Sector 16, in a police gypsy.

However, family members of Gurmeet alleged that the police slapped lenient charges against accused Dhillon under political pressure. Sudershan Singh, a relative of the injured, said: “It is a clear cut case of attempt to murder, but the police slapped lenient charges against the accused. Some local political leaders came out in the favour of the accused.”

Inspector Surinder Singh, the officiating SHO of Sector 39 police station, said: “Dhillon was rounded up at the spot by passerby and some employees of MC. Gurmeet received multiple sharp injuries on his stomach in the attack. His condition stated to be stable. We have registered an FIR under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon) of IPC on the basis of initial medical report of victim. Further legal action will be taken after receiving additional medical report.” A case was registered at Sector 39 police station.
