Sec 17 Traders Want Vendors Shifted, To Launch Agitation

Traders of Sector 17 have decided to start an agitation against the Municipal Corporation for not taking action against vendors, whose number is increasing by the day.

The decision was taken at a joint meeting of associations of Sector 17 traders today.

Neeraj Bajaj, president of the Chandigarh Business Council, said the traders had decided to put their own stalls or “phadis” in front of their shops from Friday evening onwards.

Neeraj Bajaj, president of the Chandigarh Business Council, said the traders had decided to put their own stalls or “phadis” in front of their shops from Friday evening onwards. Bajaj said the agitation would be intensified from Monday if their demands were not met. He said while the Administration had decided to make Sector 17 a no-vending zone, no action had been taken so far to remove them.

Jagdish Pal Kalra, Virendra Gularia, president of the Progressive Traders Welfare Association, LC Arora, Capt Mohinder Singh, Subhash Gulati and Arun Talwar were among the traders who attended the meeting.

The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal has also supported the agitation. A delegation comprising Charan Jiv Singh, chairman, Diwakar Sahoonja, patron, and Sanjiv Chadha, president, Progressive Traders Association, and Kamal Jit Singh Panchi, president, Traders Association, Sector 17 A & B, today called on Anurag Aggarwal, UT Home Secretary, and submitted a memorandum to him demanding immediate clearance of Sector 17 pavement areas from unauthorised vendors, who have occupied the public area restricting the movement of visitors and causing a loss of revenue to the traders.

The traders apprised the official of the plight of traders in Sector 17 where vendors have occupied pavements in front of shops, making it difficult for the public to go for shopping inside showrooms.

Charan Jiv Singh, chairman of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal and councillor, said the vending zones in other sectors should be made some distance away from the markets and objections/suggestions should be invited from market associations and the public and only thereafter the zones should be finalised without any delay and vendors shifted there.

Anurag Aggarwal, Home Secretary, told the traders that Sector 17 was a no-vending zone and vending zones in markets of other sectors would be identified soon and the vendors shifted there.
