Shopkeepers Smell Rats In Sector 22 Parking Lot

CHANDIGARH: The land around the base of numerous trees planted in the Sector 22 parking lot right opposite Kiran Theater is hollowed out and full of holes and garbage indicating a rat menace and crucial lack of sanitation in the area.

The parking lot full of vehicles, including a high-density of cars and two wheelers alike located right opposite the stride of optical showrooms, was also found to be riddled with heaps of plastic waste including plastic bags, plastic sheets, polystyrene balls among others.

A large number of holes were also found, drilled deep into the ground brought on by the damage caused by rat plaguing various market areas all around the city. “These spots under the trees have got dirty by a large number of rickshaw-pullers, auto-rickshaw drivers and other types of menial level employees, who keep there vehicles parked near the trees and keep littering the spot all day with wrappers from eatables,” said Manoj Dubey, a shopkeeper.

Several public utility dustbins, installed by the MC all around the city to prevent public littering of garbage were also found to be broken and vandalised right in the middle of a busy parking lot. “Miscreants must have done this at night, because they know when to evade police and people,” added another shopkeeper.

The dustbins were also noticed to be filled to the brim with garbage spilling onto the ground in large quantities. However, despite repeated call, P S Bhatti, MOH Incharge, MC, Chandigarh, remained unavailable for comment.
